Late Coyote Errors Benefit Toros in Series Opener

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team jumped ahead early on Aaron Greenfield's third home run of the season and then capitalized on six Cal State San Bernardino errors to silence the Coyotes 11-5 to open the California Collegiate Athletic Association series Friday.

While the Toros (4-7, 3-2 CCAA) earned 13 hits on the day, it also turned out to be a rough day defensively for the Coyotes (3-8, 0-5 CCAA), committing six errors to allow Dominguez Hills to score five unearned runs.

Greenfield got the Toros started by belting the one-out solo shot to left center in the first inning. One inning later, Joe Canepa hammered a double down the right field line, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Angel Estrada's RBI single down the right field line to give Dominguez Hills a 2-0 lead.

After the Coyotes sliced the lead in half when nine-hitter Carter Kimberly's leadoff home run in the third, the Toros responded to their half of the inning with a pair of runs of their own. Greenfield and Pierson Loska each singled into the outfield and both moved into scoring position on a passed ball, setting up for Nick Henry to drive both of them in with a double down the right field line to build a 4-1 lead.

The Toros ran away with the lead on a five-run seventh inning, using three hits and two Coyote errors to do the damage and take an 11-2 lead.

Tristan Garnett made it into the sixth inning giving up two runs on five hits and four walks. The southpaw ran into trouble in that inning that saw him leave with two out and the bases loaded. He was backed by Ricardo Serrano, who pitched a solid 1.1 inning of relief giving up just one hit.

On the other side, Blake Timm got as far as Garnett did for the Coyotes, surrendering six runs on 10 hits but did not issue a walk.

While the forecast calls for rain throughout the night and Saturday morning, the Toros and Coyotes will look to keep game two of the series on schedule at 1 p.m. Tune in on Twitter (@TorosAthletics) and GoToros.com for any changes. Due to the inclement weather, Saturday's game will only be available through live stats at GoToros.com/BaseballLive.
