Henry Goes Yard Twice as Toros Split Twinbill With Yotes

SAN BERNARDINO – Twenty-four hours after suddenly being washed out of game two at Toro Field, the Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino baseball teams picked up where they left off at Fiscalini Field Sunday, with the Coyotes stealing game one of the doubleheader 1-0 in 11 innings, while the Toros took the nightcap 9-6 to settle with the split.

The two sides will return to Carson Monday to make up the second game at 1 p.m. The game is scheduled for nine innings.

Game 1 – CSUSB 1, CSUDH 0
It turned out to be a pitching duel between Dylan Steen and Tyler Penix, which both hurlers tossed shutout ball. Steen lasted eight innings, striking out six and allowing three hits and walks each on 92 pitches. Penix, meanwhile, went the distance and threw 10 strong innings, fanning 10 and surrendering only seven hits and a walk.

The Toros' best chance in breaking the scoreless bout was in the eighth. Jeremy Ciolek led off with a walk and Angel Estrada followed with a base hit through the right side. Joe Canepa's sacrifice bunt put the potential go-ahead run at third, but Penix left the runners stranded with a ground out and a strikeout.

San Bernardino's 11th-inning rally began with a one-out walk, a groundout to first that put the winning run at second and scored on an RBI single to right.

Game 2 – CSUDH 9, CSUSB 6
Both sides started the nightcap plating one run in the first inning. The Toros took a 3-1 lead with back-to-back solo shots by Pierson Loska and Nick Henry. One inning later, Joe Canepa singled to lead off and advanced to third on Estrada's double to right center. He then scored on Jose Jimenez's sacrifice fly to build a 4-1 lead and Nick Ade's two-run homer gave the Toros a 6-1 lead.

The lead would quickly disappear in the Coyotes half of the fourth, scoring five runs to tie the game.

Dominguez Hills did break the tie in the sixth. Canepa started it off with a double down the right field line and Jimenez also hit a two-bagger to send home Canepa. Ade would single up the middle to bring in Jimenez and give the Toros an 8-6 lead. Henry cashed in on an insurance run with his second home run of the day to give the Toros the 9-6 lead.

Isaac Mullins went 3.1 innings before being taken over by Ricardo Serrano, who went on to toss a shutout relief with one strikeout. On the other side, Tanner Knapp lasted 3.1 innings also. The Coyotes used four different relievers in the scheduled 7-inning game.
