SAN MARCOS –
Colten Kresl put himself in the spotlight once again as the junior dropped 38 points for second most in a single game in Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball history and
Armstrong Ojunkwu came through twice in the end of two period as the Toros edged Cal State San Marcos 107-105 in double overtime Saturday to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Kresl came up four points just short from tying
Deshay Gipson's record of 42 set against the Cougars in 2017.
The win comes in an important way for the Toros (11-13, 7-11 CCAA). With Cal State Monterey Bay falling on the road to Cal State East Bay and pending on Cal State LA's result against first-place UC San Diego later tonight, the Toros have broken out of the three-way tie for the eighth and final spot to the CCAA Tournament next month with four games remaining.
While Kresl's 38-point extravaganza was the highlight of the day, Ojunkwu was the unsung hero twice. The first one came at the end of regulation. Down 86-84, Kresl tried to go for the win with a 3-pointer but was blocked but recovered the loose ball and went for a second try that hit the iron. Ojunkwu was able to get the put back at the buzzer to tie the game after further review by the officials.
The second one game with 14.4 seconds left and the Toros inbounding the ball from their bench.
Wonder Smith took the ball inside the arc and had to move around traffic to get a difficult shot, which hit the rim but was tipped back in by Ojunkwu at the buzzer for the win.
Smith was another key player in the game, dropping in 21 points and grabbing a team-leading 14 rebounds for a double-double.
Andrew Whitsett contributed to 15 points and Ojunkwu had 10.
The Cougars (12-13, 8-11 CCAA) saw seven players reach double figures in points. Marcus Brown led the group with 21 points.
Both teams shot 43 percent from the field.
The Toros wrap up the home schedule this weekend beginning with Cal Poly Pomona Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
