SAN MARCOS –
Dylan Steen tossed a brilliant eight innings, but the bullpen had to hang on in the ninth to preserve Cal State Dominguez Hills' 8-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series win over Cal State San Marcos Saturday.
With the series now tied at one apiece, the two ballclubs head to Carson to complete the four-game set at Toro Field with the 9/7-inning doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m.
Steen held the Cougars to one run on a walk and six hits while striking out five on 99 pitches, all of which are season bests.
Leading 4-1 in the ninth,
Edward Manzo and
Kyle Willman drew back-to-back walks to start the inning and setup for
Pierson Loska's only hit in the game that proved to be a crucial one, a three-run home run in the ninth inning. The Toros added one more in the inning when
Nick Henry tripled to right center and
Angel Estrada brought him home on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Cougars made the ninth inning a nail bitter in the end, scoring four runs – three unearned – to make it 8-5.
Both sides had nine hits in the game. Estrada and Willman each had two hits with Estrada recording a pair of RBIs.
Cougar starter Jeremy Wiegman also went the distance, throwing 7.2 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks. He also struck out seven.
