Volleyball Rallies to Win Sixth Straight to Set New Program Record

SAN FRANCISCO – After falling the first two sets by close scores to Fresno Pacific, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team rallied and clinched the next three games to leap by the Sunbirds in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase for their program-record sixth straight win to start the season Friday.

Rylee Brown led the way hitting 20 percent with 16 kills and six digs, Taylor Benitez-Fanslow continues her hot streak by posting 10 kills and 14 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.

Kalani Patrick was another contributor to the win with 28 assists while Jordan Ramirez dished out 10 off the bench.

Despite the Toros coming up short from completing last-chance rallies in the first two sets, they eventually regrouped and found their rhythm midway through the third game. Trailing by one, the Toros got on a 7-1 rally led by Brown to take a 19-15 lead and had held on to win the game.

Game four was a better tale. Leading by two, Kenadi Mitchell got the sideout with a kill and began a 6-1 momentum to establish a 16-9 lead. The Toros eventually won six of the next seven serves to win the round and force a deciding set.

Both sides never led by more than two for a majority of the deciding set. Tied a nine, Dominguez Hills ended up winning six of the next eight to complete the come-from-behind match win.

The Toros wrap up their part in the D2 West Region Showcase against Dominican Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Editor's note: The CSUDH volleyball program began in 1976, however, the records are incomplete prior to the Toros joining the NCAA/CCAA in 1981.
