SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team appears to be ready for conference play next weekend.
The Toros closed out the D2 West Region Showcase beating Dominican in three sets (25-21, 25-14, 25-22), sweeping not just the crossover but the non-conference schedule and improve to 7-0 to keep extending the best start in program history.
Dominguez Hills' test in what is expecting to be a powerhouse in the CCAA South Division begins Saturday up the 710 against Cal State LA, which entered the season ranked 19
th in the AVCA Coaches' Top 25. First serve is at 5 p.m.
Offense proved to be a key ingredient to the Toros' win over the Penguins (0-5). They combined to hit .306 while missing nine shots, both of which are season bests.
Taylor Benitez-Fanslow, who earned a spot to the San Francisco group's All-Tournament team within the D2 West Region Showcase, was the lone Toro to reach 10 kills on the evening, having reached that mark for the fifth time this season. The senior finished the weekend collecting 51 kills, 49 digs and four service aces.
Nicole Peery came up a kill short from joining Benitez-Fanslow in the double-digit ranks but did end the night hitting 39 percent.
Jordan Ramirez dished out a team-best 16 assists and 14 digs to earn her first double-double of the season and her seventh of the year while fellow Bay Area native
Lynda Nguyen reached for a dozen stops.
While the Toros stayed ahead of the Penguins for a majority of the match, they ran into trouble trying to close it out. The Penguins got on a late rally in the third set to tie the game at 22 apiece. Following a Toro timeout, they got the sideout, Peery tallied the 24
th point with a kill and a Penguin error completed the sweep.
