CSUDH Splits Doubleheader, Takes Series from Pioneers

CARSON - Cal State Dominguez Hills split a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) softball doubleheader against Cal State East Bay, Saturday at Toro Diamond. The Toros fell in game one 7-1, before taking the second game 10-2 in six innings. Combined with the twin bill sweep Friday, CSUDH wins the four-game series, 3-1. The Toros are now 23-15 overall and 17-13 in conference play. The Pioneers are now 11-29 overall and 7-21 in the league. 

It was also Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Day at Toro Diamond as CSUDH's honorary teammate Raven Stewart threw out the first pitch.

WHAT HAPPENED?
- The Toros could only muster one run and fell by a six-run margin. CSUDH's lone score came from senior Damari Simon in the third inning as she smoked one to left field for her second home run of the series and her ninth of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
- CSUEB scored one run in the first, two in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh for its seven runs in the contest.

WHAT HAPPENED?
- Down 2-0, the Toros scored a whopping 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on a run rule.
- Freshman Kelly Monroy was hit by a pitch, senior Rachael Sandoval hit a single and junior Jessica Lane reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Senior Lyzette Reveles was hit by a pitch to bring home Monroy and Simon's base hit brought in junior Chenoa Au, who pinch ran for Sandoval, to even the score 2-2.
- CSUDH wasn't done there as senior Jazmin Guzman singled to get Lane in to take the lead for good. The Toros kept scoring with two outs until a single from sophomore Kelcy Telles scored junior Kendelle Messersmith to put the margin at eight and end the game.

The Toros will embark on their final regular season road trip on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, at Cal State San Bernardino for a four-game series
