Toros Score 27 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep Over Humboldt State

MCKINLEYVILLE - Cal State Dominguez Hills had an explosive day on offense and won by scores of 17-7 and 10-7, respectively, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) softball doubleheader sweep over Humboldt State, Friday at McKinleyville High School. The Toros improve to 12-7 overall and 10-6 in conference play. The Lumberjacks drop to 4-11 overall and 2-10 in the CCAA.

WHAT HAPPENED?
- The Toros scored in the first inning as freshman Amanda Canizales brought in senior Damari Simon. The Lumberjacks responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
- CSUDH grabbed the advantage right back with a three-run inning of their own. Sophomore Chloe Wenger had an RBI single and Simon came through with an RBI double. Wenger increased the lead to 5-3 with another RBI in the top of the third.
- HSU evened it, 5-5, with two consecutive homers in the bottom of the third. The Toros and Lumberjacks had two runs apiece in the next frame to make it 7-7 after four innings of play.
- CSUDH shutout HSU in the final three innings and scored a total of 10 runs, one in the fifth, six in the sixth and three in the seventh to account for the final score.

WHAT HAPPENED?
- CSUDH got off to a 4-0 start in the first inning with senior Jazmin Guzman, senior Rachael Sandoval, junior Jade Loe and Wenger each bringing in a run each. HSU got two runs back to make it 4-2 in the bottom of the inning.
- The Toros responded with three more runs for a 7-2 lead in the top of the second. Sandoval had an RBI single and junior Chenoa Au brought in two runs on a hit to the outfield.
- The Lumberjacks chipped away at the margin with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut it to two, 7-5. CSUDH got some insurance with one in the sixth and two in the seventh. In the sixth, Guzman hit an RBI double to score Canizales. In the seventh, Canizales scored two runs on a ball through the left side.
- The insurance runs proved to be necessary as HSU scored a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. The Toros eventually got the outs necessary to close the game.
 
UPCOMING
The Toros will play another doubleheader on Saturday, March 9 at Humboldt State to close out the four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
