Two Late Rallies Come Up Short in Twinbill Loss to Cal State LA

CARSON – Playing in its own field for the first time in nearly three weeks, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team had two late rallies against crosstown rivals Cal State LA, but the comeback attempt came to a disappointing halt as the Golden Eagles snuck away two more victories, 5-3 in game one and 5-4 in game two, to take the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series from the Toros Sunday.

The Toros fall to 6-12 overall, 5-11 in the CCAA.

GAME 1: CSLA 5, CSUDH 3
TOP PERFORMERS
Kai Gomez – 2-for-4
Grant Decatrel – 1-for-3
Eduardo Frayre-Cerda – 1-for-2, 2B

WHAT HAPPENED?
- Down 5-2 in the ninth, the Toros had a golden opportunity to either walk off with the win or tie it in the ninth inning. Decatrel got the rally started with a single through the left side and moved third on Frayre-Cerda's double to left. Kaelan Crisosto singled to drive in Decatrel and Gomez was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Loska smacked a line drive going into left field before it was snagged by the shortstop for the final out.
- The Golden Eagles grabbed the lead in the second inning and added two more in the third, using an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. The difference in the game was in the seventh, when LA traded two outs for a run.
- Drake Pingel took the loss after a four-inning outing. Kodi Koorndyk went the rest of the way limiting the Golden Eagles to two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three.
- Pierson Loska ended up going hitless in the game to end his eight-game hitting streak.

GAME 2: CSLA 5, CSUDH 4
TOP PERFORMERS
Domenic Colacchio – 3-for-3, 2 R
Eduardo Frayre-Cerda – 2-for-3, RBI
Connor Dreyer – ND, 3 IP, 3 SO, 1 ER

WHAT HAPPENED?
- One inning after the Golden Eagles struck with two runs, the Toros countered with three runs of their own. Joe Canepa, Colacchio and Frayre-Cerda each singled to bring one run I, Jake Ryan also hit a one-out RBI single and Gomez drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
- Dreyer prevented Golden Eagles from scoring in the second and third inning but ran into trouble in the fourth that resulted LA in tying the game at 3-3.
- A pair of Toro errors in the fifth turned out to be a costly mistake as the Golden Eagles scored two unearned runs to take a 5-3 lead.
- The Toros got one of those runs back with a Colacchio scoring on a throwing error while Frayre-Cerda was stealing second.
- Dominguez Hills got another rally started in its final inning of the game. Gomez was hit by the pitch and Jimenez singled to move the potential tying run into scoring position. The Golden Eagles escaped the threat when Canepa flied out and a relay throw to tag out Gomez going to third was in time.

UP NEXT?
The Toros will now begin a long stretch of facing schools from Northern California starting with Sonoma State Friday at 3 p.m.
