CARSON –
Rylee Brown had 11 kills and digs each for her second double-double of the year, but it wasn't quite enough as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team was swept at home by Cal State San Marcos Tuesday night.
Taylor Benitez-Fanslow continues to rack up points consistently. The senior earned 14 points off of 10 kills, three digs and one full block.
Lynda Nguyen led the effort again in the defensive side with 14 of the Toros' 49 digs.
Kalani Patrick and
Jordan Ramirez combined for 29 assists.
San Marcos (10-6, 4-3 CCAA) was led by Emily Vander Weide, who reached double figures with 12 kills and 10 digs. Micah Hebert also had a dozen kills while Olive Aguilar cleaned up the floor 13 times to lead the Cougars in that category.
Despite falling behind early in the opening set, the Toros (8-5, 1-5 CCAA) did stay on the Cougars tail and eventually tied the game at 23 points apiece. Maddy Newcomb would deliver back-to-back kills to give the Cougars the set win.
The Toros had to keep up with the Cougars for a majority of the second game. Dominguez Hills did tie the game on two different occasions late in the game, but couldn't make the leap over San Marcos.
Dominguez Hills would fall behind 12-6 in the third round but it climbed back and cut the deficit to two thanks to a four-point run. The two sides would exchange leads up until near the end. Trailing 24-21, the Toros got the sideout on Brown's kill and two errors by the Cougars evened the score. Once again, the Cougars got the two points to take the game and 2-0 match lead.
The homestand continues Saturday as Cal State LA makes a visit to campus for a rare 5 p.m. start. The Golden Eagles come to Carson having swept UC San Diego in Los Angeles tonight.
