CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team had their backs against the wall in the third set, trailing 24-21 against a crosstown rival Cal State LA. The Toros rallied to tie the game, but the Golden Eagles got the next two points to complete the sweep (12-25, 17-25, 24-26) at the Torodome Saturday.
It was a rough night on the attack for Dominguez Hills, which fell to 8-6 overall and 1-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Toros hit a season-low .068 with 30 kills and 23 errors.
Rylee Brown and
Kenadi Mitchell led the effort with nine kills each.
On the other side of the game, the Toros made 38 total digs.
Angie Cabal led the effort by making eight defensive saves.
The Golden Eagles (10-5, 6-1 CCAA), who have won eight of their last nine matches, clicked for most of the night. While hitting nearly 33 percent on the attack, Daisy Crenshaw hit an incredible 78.6 percent with 11 kills and no errors.
The third set was the best effort for the Toros. Following 15 ties and four lead changes, Los Angeles went on a five-point run to set itself with a match point (24-20). The Toros' four-point rally began with Benitez-Fanslow forcing the sideout with a kill. Following an attack error and a successful spike by Brown, Benitez-Fanslow, still on the serve, got the service ace to tie the game at 24. Despite tying the game, the Toros made two offensive errors to give the Golden Eagles the match.
The homestand continues this weekend as the Toros welcome Sonoma State Friday and Humboldt State Saturday. Both matches are 7 p.m. starts.
