Golden Goal Gives Toros Win at UC Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ - The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team defeated UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference road matchup by a final score of 2-1 in double overtime, Sunday at UCSC Soccer Complex. With the game even in the second overtime period at 1-1, junior Holly Kaemerle, assisted by junior Sara Kattainen, scored her fourth goal of the season to end the contest and give CSUDH the win.

The Toros improve to 2-5-1 overall. The Banana Slugs drop to 7-2-2.

CSUDH got the first score early in the game. Sophomore Patricia Rubio-Martinez kicked one in as the ball found her feet after a scrum inside the box in the 10th minute. UCSC responded and got a goal of its own in the 27th minute as the two teams went into halftime deadlocked, 1-1.

The second half saw 10 shots, six by the Toros and four by the Banana Slugs, but none found the back of the net as the game went into sudden-victory overtime. CSUDH dominated overtime with a 10-1 shot advantage in just under 18 minutes. The Toros finally broke through with 2:48 on the clock in the second extra period.

"It was a great win for the CSUDH women's soccer program," said head coach Marine Cano. "This team has faced adversity all year with injuries and they all played with energy and fire today. They were not going to take 'no' for an answer. We're on to Cal State LA on Wednesday."

The Toros will return to conference play and host rival Cal State LA on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m.
