Brown, Benitez-Fanslow Help Toros Get Back to Winning Ways in Pomona

POMONA – Taylor Benitez-Fanslow racked up 15 kills, Rylee Brown had a dozen along with 10 kills for a double-double as the duo helped lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team to a four-set win (25-23, 16-25, 25-17, 25-21) over Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Arena Saturday evening.

The win ends a four-match losing skid for the Toros, who improve to 8-4 overall and 1-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Dominguez Hills had its best night offensively this season, compiling a best 31.6 percent. Benitez-Fanslow, who came up a kill short from matching her career-high set earlier in the season, hit 35.3 percent while Brown hit 32.

Lynda Nguyen also had a 10-dig night in the back row, leading a defense that made 46 stops and nine blocks while holding the Broncos (4-9, 2-5 CCAA) to a 21.5 hitting percentage. Ally Wilder recorded 14 kills for Pomona.

The Toros had to dig themselves out of a 7-1 hole to start the first set. After cutting the deficit to two, Dominguez Hills got the sideout and with Nguyen serving went on a seven-point run to take a 15-11 lead. The Broncos eventually crawled back and retook the lead at 21-20 but the Toros would win five of the next seven serves to sneak by the first set.

Following the Broncos' triumph in the second set to even the match score, the Toros regrouped and went on to hit nearly 31 percent to take the third set by eight.

Both sides would go back-and-forth with the lead in the fourth set until the Toros scored four straight points to win the round 25-21 and the match.

After playing four of their first five conference contests on the road, the Toros will get to play catch-up and host their next four opponents at home starting Tuesday with Cal State San Marcos at 7 p.m. The Cougars are coming off a three-set win over Cal State Monterey Bay in San Marcos tonight.
