Men's Basketball Defeats NCAA DI Cal State Fullerton in Final Preseason Tune-Up

FULLERTON – Four Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball players scored double figures as the Toros beat NCAA Division and Big West Conference member Cal State Fullerton 83-76 in their final exhibition game at Titan Gym on Halloween night Thursday.
 
It was an all-around effort for the Toros, as they not only shot 45.8 percent from the field, but they outrebounded the Titans 41-32. The Titans finished the night shooting 45.2 percent around the perimeter.
 
Reigning CCAA Freshman of the Year Alex Garcia dropped 15 points and went to the glass 10 times for a double-double, All-CCAA honorable mention Wonder Smith had 19 points and went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Newcomers Nick Kornieck had 17 points and Armstrong Ojunkwu scored 10 to round out the Toros in double figures.
 
The Titans, picked to finish fifth in the Big West Conference according to media, were led by Davon Clare, who recorded 17 points and eight rebounds.
 
Dominguez Hills had never trailed the Titans by more than eight. It would go into halftime trailing CSUF 30-26.
 
Trialing 50-49, Kornieck connected a 3-pointer under nine minutes remaining that would give the Toros the lead permanently. The Toros stretched their lead to 11 within the final minute of the game.
 
Smith scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half. He and Garcia also went 8-for-8 on the free throw line in the period.
 
The Toros open the 2019-20 season in Bellingham, Washington for the CCAA/GNAC Challenge next week, facing hosts Western Washington Friday at 7:30 p.m. followed by Simon Fraser Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
