Toros Ace Their Way to a Four-Set Win Over Sonoma State

CARSON – Rylee Brown and Taylor Benitez-Fanslow both collected 14 points as the duo helped lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team take a four-set win (25-22, 25-12, 17-25, 25-20) over Sonoma State at the Torodome Friday night.

The win puts the Toros back in the win column, bumping the overall record to 9-6 and 2-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Seawolves, meanwhile, dip their record to 12-6 overall, 4-4 in conference play.

Brown led the effort on both sides of the game, tallying 11 kills and 10 digs for a double-double. Benitez-Fanslow had 10 kills, four digs and two total blocks.

The Toros ended up finishing the night hitting 27 percent on the attack while the Seawolves recorded .226.

Round one saw the Toros needing to keep pace with the Seawolves, even though they trailed by no more than two points. The tide completely turned to the Toros when they won 9-of-10 rallies to build an 18-12 lead, highlighted by five service aces including four straight by Nicole Peery. Dominguez Hills would set itself for game point with a six-point lead, but Sonoma rallied to win the next four serves until Brown got the game-winning kill.

Dominguez Hills would dominate the second set. While hitting 47.1 percent in that set, the Toros would open up with a 10-3 lead and later on a 10-1 run put them ahead by 14.

After the Seawolves took the third game, they would jump out to an 11-8 lead in the fourth set. The Toros would rally behind a 9-2 run to take a 17-13 lead and never looked back.

The Toros will, once again, play Humboldt State for the third and final time Saturday at 7 p.m. Dominguez Hills won the last two meetings earlier this season, the first one at the Torodome in the season-opener and again in San Francisco for the D2 West Region Showdown.
