Benitez-Fanslow, Cabal Each Double-Double in Four-Set Win Over Jacks

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team grabbed a broom, and in four sets (25-16, 25-11, 20-25, 25-19), the Toros completed a rare three-match season sweep over Humboldt State in CCAA play at the Torodome Saturday night.

The Toros, winner of two straight, improve to 10-6 overall and 3-6 in the CCAA while the Jacks drop to 5-11 overall and 1-8 in conference play.

Taylor Benitez-Fanslow and Angie Cabal each had double-doubles on the evening. The senior Benitez-Fanslow collected a season-high 17 kills and 11 digs while the freshman Cabal dished out 19 assists and 10 digs for her first double-double.

Rylee Brown, who had 16 kills, came up a dig short from joining the club.

The Toros as a whole hit nearly 33 percent on the attack while making eight total blocks.

On the other end of the floor, Lennox Loving led the effort for the Lumberjacks with 16 kills and nine digs. As a team, Humboldt State hit .126.

Although the Jacks struck first with a Loving kill, the Toros won the next three serves and never looked back. Along with hitting 59 percent in the second set, Dominguez Hills never trailed in that round. In fact, the game was put away early as the Toros went on an 8-1 run to take a 14-6 lead.

The Toros did find themselves behind in the third set. The Jacks would build a 16-6 lead only to see the Toros trim it to two thanks to an eight-point run. Humboldt State would eventually hold on to the lead and force the fourth game.

Tied at three in the fourth set, the Toros broke away by winning 7-of-8 rallies to take a 10-5 lead.

The Toros complete the season series sweep against the Jacks, having taken the first match in Carson to open the 2019 campaign and again in the D2 West Region Showcase in San Francisco.

Dominguez Hills goes back to northern California to play Chico State Friday and Stanislaus State Saturday. Both matches are 7 p.m. start times.
