CARSON – Playing the third game in less than a week, a tired Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team gave it everything they had, but Sonoma State, which leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association got two second-half goals to best the Toros 2-0 at Toro Stadium Friday evening.
It was pretty much a quiet night on the offensive side for both teams. The Toros (3-6-1, 1-3-0 CCAA) had six shots overall, three on goal.
The best chance for the Toros to get on the board was four minutes into the second half.
Chrystal Dorado, the hero from Wednesday's overtime win against Cal State LA, chipped a loose ball from the top of the box but was brilliantly saved by Sonoma's keeper Ashley Morton.
The Seawolves (9-2-0, 5-0-0 CCAA) broke the ice in the 72
nd minute. Sarah Lindborg launched a ball from midfield into the goal box where Julia Pritchard chested it in front of her, made a 180 degree turn and shoot to beat keeper
Jessica Neighbors for the goal.
The Toros' best chance to answer back in between the two goals came with 20 minutes left.
Salma Perez battled a couple of defenders and worked her way to the top of the box for a left-footed shot, only to be caught by Morton.
The second goal came in the 72
nd minute, Alexia Espitia sprinted from midfield and took a shot off the bounce from 25 yards out. As the ball was arching its way into the goal, Neighbors got her right hand on it, but it wasn't enough as it deflected off her glove and into the goal.
The Toros hit the road for the next two weekends, starting Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
