High Five! Toros Rally in Late Innings to Keep Win Streak Going

POMONA – Trailing nearly the entire game, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team waited until the ninth inning to tie it and the 10th to take a 3-2 comeback win over Cal Poly Pomona to start the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series Thursday.

The Toros continue to not only keep rolling with a five-game win streak but they are now putting dents in the CCAA standings. They have already eliminated Stanislaus State from postseason contention last weekend and the win today forced the Broncos to wait another day to clinch a CCAA Tournament berth along with giving four other contenders a chance to catch up to them.

Both teams plated runs in the third inning but it was Cal Poly Pomona that took a 2-1 lead at the end of the frame. Evan Yeager singled his first of two hits on the day to start the third and eventually scored when Justin Morris hammered down a base hit down the right field line.

The Broncos responded with a two-run homer by Nic Hernandez.

Morris got the ninth-inning rally started with a single and a mistake by pitcher Bryan Conley enabled him to reach third and score in the tying run on Dalton Duarte's sacrifice fly.

Daryl Donerson led off the 10th with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Charles Steele. A controversial balk allowed him to move to third and Yeager used his second hit up the middle to score the go-ahead run.

Left-hander Luke Laurita held his ground even though he allowed the two-run homer in the third along with seven hits and two walks. He did make through seven innings striking out four. Joshua Gogue went the rest of the way tossing a one-hit shutout performance.

Ryan Alsworth also had a solid day for the Broncos, going seven innings allowing one run but striking out six.

The two teams will meet again at Scolinos Field Friday at 3 p.m. The series will shift to Toro Field for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
