CHICO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team got off to a sluggish start on both ends of the field as Chico State struck early and secured a 13-7 game-four win over the Toros Sunday afternoon.
Trevor North, getting his first start since April 9, got two of the Toros eight hits and also touched home plate twice.
John Gonzalez had one hit, a two-run homer in the fourth to end a scoring drought that began in game two of the series.
Chico State got off to a quick start by scoring seven runs in the first three innings.
Joe Mercado had a quick start before
Willie Traynor took over and went 2.2 innings striking out two.
Spencer Hereford had the best performance on the mound, allowing one run in 3.1 innings.
The Toros avoided a third consecutive shutout in the fourth inning. Gonzalez hit the two-out, two-run home run to break the streak and
Jordan James continued the inning by reaching on an error. North and
Jesus Sanchez hit back-to-back singles to knock in two more and cut the Wildcats lead to 7-4.
Chico State would eventually put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth to take a 13-4 lead. Dominguez Hills did get three runs across in the ninth. James reached on an error again and North singled for his second hit of the day to put two runners on.
Eduardo Frayre-Cerda hit an RBI single to right center to score in James and
Jeremy Ciolek hit a pinch-hit single to load the bases. With two down, the Toros got two runs across when
Kevin Lugo drew a walk and
Stephen Kish was hit by the pitch.
The Toros return home for a four-game series with Stanislaus State beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
