Dalton Duarte went deep twice for the second time this season as the top order of the lineup consisting him,
Esteban Ortega and
Kai Gomez combined for seven RBIs in the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team's 9-8 10-inning win over Stanislaus State to open the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series Friday.
After conceding a four-run lead in the ninth, the Toros got the walkoff in the 10
th started with
Justin Morris hitting a one-out double up the middle and scored from third on
Daryl Donerson's single to right.
The Toros combined for 14 hits, including three from Duarte and two each from five others.
Rigo Fernandez made it through five innings striking out seven but gave up three earned runs on four hits and five walks.
Joshua Gogue pitched effectively in relief from that point on until running into trouble in the ninth. A fielding error became costly as it allowed the Warriors to tie the game at eight on four unearned runs.
Jacob Musial came in and despite Andrew Wheat hitting a three-run double to tie the game, the right-hander pitched a solid 10
th.
It didn't take until Duarte's first home run in the fourth that the Toros got their first hit off starter Joe Ryan, who made it through six innings striking out eight but allowing eight runs, six earned, on nine hits.
The Toros did big damage in the fifth inning in which they capitalized on an error to score six unearned runs.
Stephen Kish led off with a single and
Jordan James reached on a fielder's choice to put two on.
Jesus Sanchez and Gomez hit back-to-back RBI singles and
Esteban Ortega delivered a two-run triple to give the Toros a 5-4 lead. Duarte padded the lead with a two-run shot to dead center field.
Dominguez Hills and Stanislaus State will now play the 9/7-inning doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
