CHICO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team capitalized on Chico State's three errors in the middle innings to score five unearned runs and a pair of doubles from
Esteban Ortega and pinch-hitter
John Gonzalez in the ninth lifted the Toros 6-5 over the two-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champions to start the four-game series Friday.
The Toros collect their 10th conference win of the season and improve to 13-26 overall.
It wasn't a pleasant evening on the defensive end for both teams as each ballclub committed three errors.
Rigo Fernandez was charged for two earned runs despite the defensive mistakes allowed two more across during the southpaw's watch. Fernandez would strike out three but handed five hits and six walks.
On the other side, Wildcat starter Grant Larson got the worst of it as he was tagged for five unearned runs even though he gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out five.
Tied at five going into the ninth, Ortega hit a fly ball which, according to the Voice of the Wildcats Michael Baca, was inches away from a home run but instead settled with a double. While a fly out by
Dalton Duarte helped move Ortega to third, it didn't seem to be necessary as Gonzalez hit a deep fly ball to center for an RBI two-bagger and score the eventual winning run.
The Toros found themselves in a 3-0 hole after three innings. The rally began in the fourth inning when
Stephen Kish opened with a single and made his way home with a passed ball and two groundouts.
Chico State suffered perhaps the worst inning of the season in the fifth, when the Toros went through the entire lineup to score in four runs including a two-run double by Duarte to take a 5-3 lead.
The lead did not last long as the Wildcats responded with two runs in their half of the inning.
Jacob Musial and
Ian Codina combined for three hits and four strikeouts in relief. On the offensive end, the Toros combined for 10 hits, including three from Ortega.
The two teams will play the twinbill Saturday beginning at noon.
