CARSON - Cal State Dominguez Hills split a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) softball doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay, Friday afternoon at Toro Diamond. The Toros took game one by a score of 3-0, before falling in the second game 9-8.

The Toros are now 14-28 overall and 10-20 in the CCAA. The Otters are 21-22 overall and 14-15 in conference play.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday, April 14, starting at 11 a.m. It will also be Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Day at Toro Diamond, informing people of the disease that affects more than 70,000 people worldwide.

Game One - CSUDH 3, CSUMB 0
Senior pitcher
Alyssa Valinches threw a complete-game shutout and junior catcher
Rachael Sandoval drove in three runs to lead the Toros to a 3-0 win over the Otters to open the four-game series. Valinches had five strikeouts and gave up two hits in seven innings of work. Sandoval went 2-for-3 with all three RBI. Sophomore outfielder
Jessica Lane also went 2-for-3 with two runs. The other Toro run came from senior designated player
Kayla Lock.

CSUDH scored in the first as Lane tripled and was brought home by a Sandoval single. With Lock on first and Lane on second in the bottom of the third, Sandoval hit into a fielder's choice. Lock was called out at second as Lane rounded third and touched home. Consecutive doubles by Lock and Sandoval scored the third run of the game for the Toros in the fifth.

Game Two - CSUMB 9, CSUDH 8
The Toros led 8-3 before giving up six runs in the final four frames as the Otters prevailed 9-8. Lane had two hits, one run and two RBI. Senior outfielder
Doreen Corella went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Sophomore shortstop
Kendelle Messersmith also went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs. Senior infielder
Alexis Pintado and freshman outfielder
Kelcy Telles each had two RBI.

CSUMB struck right out of the gates with three runs in the top of the first. CSUDH responded with five in the bottom of the inning. Lane singled and advanced to second as Sandoval was walked. Corella singled to get Lane to home. Sophomore pitcher
Jade Loe and Messersmith drew consecutive walks to load the bases and score Sandoval, respectively. Pintado hit a two-run single to plate Loe and Corella, and Telles' infield base hit got Messersmith home.

The Toros extended their lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Telles drew a walk to get Corella in. Lane then singled to get Pintado and Messersmith to touch home plate.

CSUMB would mount a come back and get three runs in the top of the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
