Extra-Base Hits From Lugo, Kish Help Toros Rally in the Eighth

CARSON – Kevin Lugo and Stephen Kish each had extra-base, RBI hits that erased a two-run deficit and lifted the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team to an 11-9 win over Cal State San Bernardino to open the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series Thursday.

Lugo ended his day with his first career home run and a double, Esteban Ortega also had a home run and came up nearly a foot short from having two. Jordan James also had a two-hit performance.

Jacob Musial overcame a hiccup in the first which resulted an unearned run and went on to retire 10 straight batters. He got a 3-1 lead headed into the fifth inning when the Coyotes scored four, including a three-run double.

Dominguez Hills responded in its half of the inning with a four-run inning that began with Lugo hitting a solo shot to right center field. The three other runs came on the benefit from Coyote starter Garret Christiansen, who threw four wild pitches.

San Bernardino got the lead back by scoring two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Toros rally in the eighth started with pinch-hitter Jeremy Ciolek and Ortega hitting back-to-back singles. Lugo got the first run across with a double to left center and Kish followed with a go-ahead two-run triple to the same direction. Crisosto hit a sacrifice fly to add breathing room.

Ian Codina took the win after throwing two shutout innings of relief.

The two teams meet at Toro Field Friday at 2 p.m.
