CARSON –
Dalton Duarte hit his seventh home run of the season to put the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team ahead in the fifth inning but the Toros couldn't add on to it as San Francisco State scored a run in the next three frames to take a 6-4 series-opening win at Toro Field Thursday.
The Toros (8-19, 5-16 CCAA) had to play catchup following a two-run home run by the Gators to start the game. They eventually tied the game in the fourth when
Daryl Donerson hit a two-out triple down the left field line, scoring in Duarte from third and
Kevin Lugo from first.
After Dominguez Hills captured the 4-3 lead in the fifth, it was short lived as the Gators responded with a leadoff homer to right field by Harley Lopez, ending left-hander
Luke Laurita's day after going five innings with five strikeouts.
San Francisco State moved up front in the seventh using an inning-opening triple followed by a sacrifice fly. It got the insurance run in the eighth driving in a RBI single with the bases loaded.
Gator starter Grant Vogenthaler was nearly exceptional in his 6.2 innings of work, striking out nine but was tagged for eight hits, including two each from lefties Duarte and Lugo. The Gators bullpen would go perfect the rest of the way.
The two teams meet again in a doubleheader Friday beginning at noon.
