Toros Defeat Holy Names 11-3 in Five Innings to Split Final Day of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK - The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team defeated Holy Names by a final score of 11-3 in five innings to salvage a split on the final day of the Tournament of Champions presented by the city of Turlock, Sunday at Turlock Sports Complex. The Toros fell to Notre Dame de Namur in their first game of the day, 4-2.
 
CSUDH is now 11-19 overall.
 
The Toros will resume conference play with a four-game road series against Chico State, Thursday and Friday, March 29-30.
 
Game One - NDNU 4, CSUDH 2
The Toros fell 4-2 as they committed four errors and Notre Dame de Namur turned three double plays.
 
Sophomore pitcher Jade Loe threw six innings and gave up two earned runs. Junior infielder Jazmin Guzman had two hits and two runs. Senior outfielder Kayla Lock had two hits and one RBI.
 
The Argonauts scored one run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. CSUDH got a run back in the top of the third. Guzman singled, advanced to third on an NDNU throwing error and came home on Lock's RBI base hit.
 
After the Argonauts scored two in the bottom of the fourth, the Toros came back with one run in the top of the fifth. Guzman singled, advanced to third on Lock's base hit and scored on a wild pitch to account for the final score of the game. CSUDH had two runners on with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but NDNU turned a double play and forced a CSUDH ground out to close the door.
 
Game Two - CSUDH 11, HNU 3 (5 innings)
The Toros scored four runs in the fourth and six in the fifth to defeat Holy Names 11-3 in five innings.
 
Freshman pitcher/infielder Chloe Wenger (1-1) picked up her first win of the season, giving up one run in 2.2 innings of relief. Loe pitched the first 2.1 frames and gave up two runs. Guzman had one hit and one run. Lock recorded one hit, one run and three RBI. Junior outfielder Doreen Corella had two hits one run and two RBI. Wenger went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs.
 
CSUDH nabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Guzman doubled and came home on a fielding error. HNU responded and took the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs to take the advantage.
 
The Toros put up four runs in the top of the fourth. Junior designated player Renee Galindo singled and was pinch ran for by Lexi Madrid. Madrid took second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore infielder Kendelle Messersmith and came all the way home on an error. Wenger singled up the middle and advanced to third after senior infielder Alexis Pintado forced another Hawk error in the inning. Freshman outfielder Kelcy Telles reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Lock unleashed a bases-clearing triple to score Wenger, Pintado and Telles.
 
CSUDH added six more in the top of the fifth thanks to two hits and three HNU errors for a 11-2 lead heading into the final inning. Two RBI in the inning came from Corella. The Hawks struck for one run in the bottom of the inning, but the Toros were able to get the necessary outs to end the game.
