CHICO - Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped two games to No. 3 Chico State by final scores of 9-1 in six innings and 14-2 in five innings in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) softball doubleheader, Thursday at University Softball Field.
The Toros are now 11-21 overall and 7-15 in conference play. The Wildcats improve to 33-3 overall and sit in pole position in the CCAA with a 23-3 league record.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Friday, March 30 at 11 a.m. to wrap-up the four-game series.
Game One - Chico State 9, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1 (6 innings)
The Toros fell in the first game in six innings, 9-1.
After the Wildcats scored in the first inning, CSUDH responded in the top of the third with a run of its own to even the score 1-1. Junior infielder
Jazmin Guzman drew a walk and reached second on senior outfielder
Kayla Lock's infield hit. Junior catcher
Rachael Sandoval shot one to the outfield in the ensuing at bat to bring home Guzman to tie it the game.
Chico State scored five runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to end the contest. Sandoval went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Senior pitcher
Alyssa Valinches struck out seven in a losing effort.
Game Two - Chico State 14, Cal State Dominguez Hills 2 (5 innings)
The Toros recorded seven hits, but could not match the Wildcats in a 14-2 loss in five innings in game two.
Chico State raced out to a 7-0 lead before CSUDH was able to get two in the top of the third. Guzman singled and took second on Sandoval's base hit to left field. Junior outfielder
Doreen Corella reached on a fielder's choice as Guzman was called out at third to put runners on first and second for the Toros.
Chloe Wenger cleared the bases and scored Sandoval and Corella with a double to right center.
The Wildcats put up five runs in the third and two in the fourth to complete the game in five. Guzman, Sandoval and Wenger each went 2-for-3 from the plate.
