Toros Drop Series Opener at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES – Three Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team had an early lead but couldn't hold down a red-hot Cal State LA in the Toros 4-3 series-opening defeat at Reeder Field Thursday afternoon.

Because of rain on the forecast Friday afternoon, both teams will push back game two's start to 1 p.m. to beat it out.

While the Toros (7-12, 4-9 CCAA) had nine total hits, only Trevor North, Kai Gomez and Kaelan Crisosto each had two. Stephen Kish had the lone extra base hit, an RBI double in the third.

The Golden Eagles (11-7, 8-5 CCAA), coming off a surprisingly four-game sweep over Cal Poly Pomona last weekend, tackled in 11 knocks on the night. Left fielder Arnett Johnson brought in three runs including the go-ahead triple in the sixth inning.

Rigo Fernandez made a return to the mound after missing the last series against Cal State San Bernardino last weekend, going 5.2 innings and striking out four. Ian Codina went the rest of the way tossing shutout innings and fanning three.

The Toros had no problem getting hits on Golden Eagle starter Angel Lerma, who was charged with two earned runs on seven hits but struck out five.

Dominguez Hills had all three of its runs scored in as many innings. The first inning was the benefit of two errors. In the second inning, Daryl Donerson was hit by the pitch and Gomez brought him in with a single to right.

After Cal State LA tied the game in the second inning, the Toros broke the tie in the third when Esteban Ortega and Kevin Lugo had back-to-back lead-off singles and a Crisosto RBI double to center.

The Toros made it an entire game without committing an error on the field, their first since game one of the Cal State San Marcos series earlier in the month.
