SAN BERNARDINO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team's lineup came to life and nearly set new records in a 22-14 game-one win over Cal State San Bernardino at Fiscalini Field Sunday. Game two was quite the opposite as the Coyotes claimed the nightcap 5-1 to split the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
At the end of the day, both ball clubs combined for 48 hits, 52 runs, 33 batted in and 21 walks.
Kevin Lugo and
Jordan James each had five knocks while
Kevin Lugo got the same exact number in the RBI column in game one. Kish brought in four runs with his bat.
Game 1 – CSUDH 22, CSUSB 14
The Toros (7-11, 6-6 CCAA) collected 19 hits and was short from the program-record set in 2002. That ballclub knocked out San Francisco State with 28 runs and 26 hits. They also got the benefit of poor pitching from the Coyotes (7-11, 5-7 CCAA), which five different hurlers combined for 14 free passes, including six from starter Matthew Moriarty. In fact, Morarity walked the first three batters he faced and two-run double by Kish along with a RBI groundout and wild pitch gave the Toros a 4-0 lead.
Although both teams were shut out in the third, fifth and nine innings, the Toros brought in two or more runs in the other frames. San Bernardino did all its damage in two innings, scoring five in the first and eight in the fourth.
The 4-5 combo of Lugo and Kish each had a pair of two-run hits.
Ian Codina had another outstanding performance out of the bullpen, throwing 5.1 shutout innings while striking out a career-high eight.
Game 2 – CSUSB 5, CSUDH 1
Much like the second game of the series, the Toros couldn't find any offensive momentum, despite Kish and
Esteban Ortega stretching two of the seven total hits into a double. Kish's lead-off two-bagger eventually led to Dominguez Hills' only run.
James had three hits, one of which brought in the lone run.
Starter
Joe Mercado held the Coyotes lineup to a double in the first and a walk in the second but three home runs in the fourth hurt the left-hander with all five runs.
Matt Stearns and
Joshua Gogue each pitched a shutout inning of relief.
Konner Arnold fanned nine in a complete-game performance.
The Toros will visit Cal State LA's Reeder Field to begin the series with the Golden Eagles Thursday at 6 p.m.
