CARSON - The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team defeated No. 5 Humboldt State by final scores of 5-0 and 9-6 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader, Friday at the Toro Diamond.

The Toros improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Lumberjacks drop to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.

The two teams will play another doubleheader to close the four-game series on Saturday, Feb. 10. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Game 1 - CSUDH 5, HSU 0
Senior right-handed pitcher
Alyssa Valinches recorded 11 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout as CSUDH handed HSU a 5-0 loss in game one.

Sophomore infielder
Kendelle Messersmith went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Freshman infielder
Chloe Wenger, senior infielder
Alexis Pintado and senior outfielder
Doreen Corella also hit 2-for-3 from the plate as well.

The Toros went up early, scoring two in the bottom of the first. Junior infielder
Jazmin Guzman hit a single up the middle and advanced to second on sophomore outfielder
Jessica Lane's sacrifice bunt. A Messersmith double to the outfield brought Guzman home. Messersmith scored on a Lumberjacks error.

Messersmith was able to get on base again in the third and touched home plate on sophomore catcher
Rachael Sandoval's RBI single as CSUDH took a 3-0 lead. A Pintado home run and an RBI hit from junior outfielder
Damari Simon in the fourth put the Toros up 5-0.

Valinches went three-up-and-three-down in four of her seven innings pitched.

Game 2 - CSUDH 9, HSU 6
A go-ahead RBI single from Corella in the fifth inning scored Sandoval as CSUDH defeated HSU 9-6.

Freshman right-handed pitcher
Alyssa Olague threw a complete game with three strikeouts. Guzman went 2-for-4 with two runs. Sandoval also had two hits with two runs and three RBI.

The Toros got the early lead again with a RBI single from Simon to score Guzman. The Lumberjacks took the advantage right back with two in the top of the second.

CSUDH took back the lead in the third as Simon recorded her second RBI and Sandoval hit a two-run blast to left field for a 4-2 lead. HSU responded again and evened the score 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth.

The Lumberjacks were able to plate two in the fifth for a two-run advantage. The Toros answered with three in the bottom of the fifth. Messersmith hit a single to score Lane and with the bases loaded, junior designated player
Renee Galindo was hit by a pitch to score senior
Kayla Lock who pinch ran and tie the score, 6-6. With two outs, Corella singled up the middle to bring home Sandoval for the game-winner.

The Toros added two more insurance runs in the sixth with RBI from Wenger and Sandoval to account for the final score and prevail by three.
