CARSON - The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader to No. 5 Humboldt State by scores of 4-2 and 13-9, Saturday at the Toro Diamond. The four-game series was split between the two teams, 2-2.
The Toros are now 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Lumberjacks are also 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA.
CSUDH will travel to Rohnert Park next week to play Sonoma State in a four-game series on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17.
Game 1 - HSU 4, CSUDH 2
HSU scored two in the top of the first and never looked back and put down the Toros 4-2. Sophomore infielder
Kendelle Messersmith went 2-for-3. Sophomore catcher
Rachael Sandoval hit 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
The Lumberjacks scored two in the top of the first and one in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. Sandoval cut the margin to two in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to left field.
HSU scored another in the top of the sixth for a 4-1 advantage. In the bottom of the inning, Messersmith singled and was pinch ran for by freshman
Kelcy Telles. Telles advanced to second on Sandoval's single and third on freshman pinch hitter
Miranda Cabanayan's hit to the outfield. Junior designated player
Renee Galindo hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder to score Telles.
The Toros were sent away in order in the bottom of the seventh as HSU prevailed.
Game 2 - HSU 13, CSUDH 9
With a 9-5 lead, CSUDH gave up eight runs in the top of the seventh and fell to HSU 13-9. Junior infielder
Jazmin Guzman went 2-for-3 with two runs. Junior outfielder
Damari Simon had one hit, two runs and one RBI. Sophomore infielder
Kendelle Messersmith had two hits, two RBI and one run.
After the Lumberjacks scored two in the top of the first, the Toros came back and plated five runs in the bottom of the third. Guzman and sophomore outfielder
Jessica Lane both singled to occupy first and second. Simon reached on an error as Guzman touched home. Messersmith then singled to bring in Simon and Lane. Another HSU error got Messersmith home. A RBI single from senior infielder
Alexis Pintado gave CSUDH a 5-2 advantage.
The Lumberjacks got two in in the top of the fourth to make it a 5-4 game. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, senior outfielder
Kayla Lock smoked a double to right center to give CSUDH a three-run lead.
HSU got one in the top of the sixth, before the Toros got two more in the bottom of the inning with RBI from Simon and Sandoval for a 9-5 advantage.
The Lumberjacks scored eight runs in the top of the seventh and CSUDH was retired in order in the bottom of the inning to account for the final score.
