SAN DIEGO –
Dalton Duarte hit his third home run in as many games to drive in the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team's only runs as the Toros fell to No. 24 Point Loma 6-2 in the middle game of a non-conference series Friday afternoon.
Duarte's two-run shot in the sixth inning had cut the Sea Lions (4-4) to 3-2. But Point Loma ended up getting that two-run lead back in its half of the inning and added two more in the seventh.
The Toros had a rally going in the ninth inning. Duarte led off with a single to left center and advanced to third on
Jordan James' double. But both were stranded as all three outs were on strikeouts.
Willie Traynor made it through five innings allowing four of those runs on seven hits and three walks. In addition to the 84 pitches thrown, Traynor fanned three.
Duarte and
Esteban Ortega, who moved into the cleanup role, each had two of the seven Toro hits.
The rubber game of the series will take place Saturday at noon.
