SAN DIEGO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team put five on the board in the fourth inning but the difference was in the sixth frame as the Toros edged No. 24 Point Loma 6-5 to claim the final non-conference series Saturday.
Joe Mercado threw six solid innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.
It was a big day for
Kai Gomez, who in his second straight game as the leadoff man went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
Although the Sea Lions struck first with a run in the first inning, the Toros did serious damage in the fourth. After
John Gonzalez led off with a walk,
Eduardo Frayre-Cerda followed with a two-run homer into left to give the Toros a 2-1 lead.
Daryl Donerson and
Jordan James, whom both were moved down in the lineup, got back-to-back singles to keep the momentum going.
Trevor North followed with a RBI groundout to first and Gomez got his lone RBI with a single through the left side.
Justin Morris was hit by the pitch to load the bases and another walk by Gonzalez in his second turn of the inning gave the Toros a 5-1 lead.
The run differential in the sixth inning came from Gomez, who scored on a wild pitch.
Point Loma had a rally going in the eighth when cleanup man Tyler Flores hit a three-run homer, his second shot in the series, to make it a one-run game.
Matt Stearns threw 1.2 shutout innings for his first save.
The Toros improve to 3-3 overall as California Collegiate Athletic Association play begins Thursday at national runner-up UC San Diego. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
