CARSON – Having played the first eight games of the season on the road, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team's long-awaited home opener arrived Saturday with a 76-72 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Sonoma State.
 
The Toros, winner of three straight, improve to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Sonoma State falls to 5-6 overall, 3-4 in the CCAA. The two teams will meet again in Rohnert Park next month.
 
TOP PERFORMERS
Michael Chavers – 20 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists
Colten Kresl – 15 points, 3-4 3-point FG
Mikey Hatfield – 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists
 
WHAT HAPPENED?
- Trailing 66-64 with 3:49 left, Chavers got a layup 39 seconds later that would setup a 12-6 run the rest of the way. The Toros got a pair of successful free throws each from Kresl and Wonder Smith within the final eight seconds to preserve a least a four-point lead.
- Neither team had a double-digit lead. The Toros' largest lead was nine mid-way through the second half. The Seawolves' led by as many as seven halfway through the first period.
- Free throws proved to be beneficial for Dominguez Hills as it went 14-for-22 on the line. Chavers and Smith each had four.
- Dominguez Hills had no trouble making field goals, shooting over half a century in each half to finish 53 percent from the field. It the fourth time this season the Toros have shot 50 percent or better.
 


Postgame Notes
- The Toros have now won the last five home openers.
- Smith made his debut with the Toros, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes off the bench.
 
WHO'S NEXT?
The weeklong homestand continues Monday when the Toros close out the year 2018 with a SoCal matchup with Cal State San Marcos. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
