Volleyball Falls on Final Day of D2 West Region Showcase

LACEY, Wash. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team closed out the D2 West Region Showcase with a pair of losses Saturday, falling to Point Loma in four sets followed by a five-set defeat to host Saint Martin's.
 
The Toros (4-4) leave the Pacific Northwest going 1-3 against opponents from the GNAC and PacWest Conference this weekend.
 
Match 1 – PLNU 3, CSUDH 1 (21-25, 25-16, 30-32, 16-25)
CSUDH claimed the second set win after scoring 7-of-8 rally points to take a 22-15 lead. The Toros were unable to get the game point in the third set as the Sea Lions rallied from being down by two to winning 32-30.
 
Bridget Heins had 11 kills while Claire Autry and Hailey Smith each had 10. Lynda Nguyen made 19 digs, Sarah Greenland and Briana Boyd had 13 and 12, respectively, with Rylee Kiger setting up for 44 assists.
 
Match 2 – SMU 3, CSUDH 2 (19-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-13, 13-15)
The freshman Nguyen reached new heights in the defensive saves column by making a career-high 25 digs on the match. Kiger had a double-double with 52 assists and 15 digs, and Boyd made 17 digs.
 
Four Toros reached double figures on the attack with Heins producing 15 kills, Cecelia Lucas had a dozen and Tati Yandall and Autry had 10.
 
CSUDH was about to fall into a 2-0 set deficit but it was awarded four consecutive points to sneak away with a 26-24 win.
 
After the Saints took the third game, the Toros got out of the gate early to take an 8-2 lead. The Saints did play catch-up and cut the deficit to 13-10 but the Toros went on a rally by winning 12 of the next three points to force a fifth game.
 
The deciding set saw the Toros trying to keep up with the Saints. They never led in the game but stayed within three points. Kiger managed to win a service ace to make it a 14-13 Saint Martin's lead but the Saints got the match-winning kill to halt the Toros rally.
 
The CCAA season this weekend with the Toros visiting Stanislaus State Friday followed by Chico State Saturday. Both matches are at 7 p.m.
