Physical Matchup Between Toros and No. 2 Simon Fraser Ends in Draw

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team earned a 0-0 double overtime draw against No. 2 Simon Fraser in non-conference action, Saturday at Toro Stadium. In a game that featured a lot of physicality, nine cards were given and a total of 22 common fouls were called.

The Toros now hold a 6-3-1 record. The Clan are 5-1-2.

Neither team could get a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes. In the 72nd minute, Israel Gonzalez received his second yellow card, which disqualified him for the rest of the game. CSUDH was forced to play 11-on-10 from that point.

With only 8:12 left in regulation, the Toros were called for a foul inside the box. SFU's Mamadi Camara tried to aim for the upper right corner in the ensuing penalty kick, but hit the crossbar instead as CSUDH's hopes were kept alive.

In a turn of events the Toros, who were playing undermanned since the second half, were given an opportunity in overtime. In the 105th minute, Angel Ayala made a run at Clan goalie Miguel Hof trying to recover a ball that was headed back by his own defender. Hof panicked and caught the ball outside the box which sent him out of the game. In the 108th minute, a red card was given to SFU's Pascal Schmidt as CSUDH was now the team with more players on the field.

With less than 1:30 left to go, Ayala made a couple of dribble moves on the left side and went for glory, but the ball was kicked right to Clan backup goalie Aidan Bain.

Toro goalkeeper Chase Gentry earned his third shutout of the season and made five saves.

CSUDH will hit the road and play Cal State East Bay on Friday, Oct. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
