CARSON -- The 19th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team used two second half goals to defeat Cal State San Marcos in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Monday at Toro Stadium.
Â
The Toros improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, good for second place in the CCAA table. The Cougars drop to 2-4-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the CCAA.
Â
The two teams were deadlocked at halftime, 0-0. CSUDH had an 8-6 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.
Â
The Toros took the lead in the 67th minute as
Matt Lockwood dribbled the ball up the right side and found
Manuel Paez. Paez made several touches before slotting the ball into the lower left corner for the score.
Â
CSUDH got some insurance in the 86th minute as
Leonardo Nogueira took Paez's pass and made a few moves down the left side. Nogueira beat his defender and the goalie, finding the lower right corner of the goal.
Â
Carlos Torres Jr. prevented a sure goal in the first half. A free kick from CSUSM's Bryan Morrison just outside of the box was headed out by
Carlos Torres Jr. who was positioned in the perfect place by the near post. Goalie
Benito Gonzales was playing the far post and most likely would not have been able to get the save.
Â
Gonzales and
Chase Gentry split time at goalie, each amassing two saves each.
Â
The Toros will travel to Cal State LA on Thursday, Sept. 27 in a non-conference matchup, even though the two are rivals in the CCAA.Â
