No. 19 Toros Edged by Defending Champion Tritons

CARSON – Juan Hernandez's fourth goal of the season broke the ice midway through the second half but the No. 19 Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team couldn't maintain the lead as UC San Diego came back and snuck away with a 2-1 CCAA win Friday evening.

The difference in the match came in the 86th minute, when a foul during a cross into CSUDH's box was called against the Toros and awarded a penalty kick to the Tritons. Malek Bashti beat Chase Gentry by going to the right side.

Despite the final result, Dominguez Hills (5-2-0, 2-1-0 CCAA) dominated the attack with a 21-9 shooting advantage, 9-5 in goal. Triton keeper Pedro Enciso made three of four defensive saves.

After a scoreless first half, the Toros capitalized on a mistake by Enciso. He fumbled the ball and Juan Hernandez was there to recover, dribble and slot it into the goal.

The Toros had two close chances to get a goal in the 58th minute. Kian Meyer had a header hit the crossbar and Gilberto Rocha went for a header himself off the rebound but produced the same result.

UCSD's tying goal came in the 80th minute when Nolan Mac fired a shot to the left side that hits the crossbar and rattled in.

CSUDH was unable to find any momentum after the penalty kick. Manual Paez had the final shot that was blocked by a Triton defender.

The Toros return to the pitch on a rare Monday matchup with Cal State San Marcos. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's contest.
