Road Upset Over No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona Opens Conference Play for CSUDH

POMONA -- Junior midfielder Adam Vargas found the net in the 77th minute as the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team upset No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona by a final score of 1-0 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Friday night at Kellogg Field.

Vargas and senior midfielder Gilberto Rocha played a two-man game down the left side of the field, passing the ball back-and-forth to each other. Vargas eventually took the pass, dribbled one step inside and kicked the ball from the top left of the box to the right side of the net past the outstretched arms of Bronco goalie Jason Trejos.

Although the two teams combined for a total of 34 shots, the game featured only the one goal by Vargas. CPP outshot CSUDH 21-13, including 13-7 in the second half. Toro goalkeeper Chase Gentry amassed three saves. Trejos also compiled three stops for the Broncos.

CSUDH escaped CPP scoring chances on numerous occasions. The closest opportunity for the Broncos to grab a goal came in the 56th minute when Matthew Perez's shot got by Gentry, but hit the post and bounced out.

The Toros will have one day off before playing Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday, Sept. 17. The game is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
