Otters Avoid Sweep in Extras Despite Castaneda's Game-Tying Double in the Ninth

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team was down to its last strike when designated hitter Miguel Castaneda delivered a game-tying RBI double, but Cal State Monterey Bay regained the lead in the 11th inning to take a 5-4 win over the Toros in the CCAA series final Sunday.

It took extra innings for the Otters (21-13, 13-9 CCAA) to avoid a series sweep as the Toros (9-25, 7-17 CCAA) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th. The Toros did get a solid outing from starting pitcher Ethan Etchebarren who went 5.1 innings striking out eight and giving up just four runs.

The game was close throughout and although only nine total runs crossed the plate, both teams combined for 27 hits. Offensively the Toros were led by Brandon Polizzi and Nick Morelli who finished the game with three hits apiece.

The Otters started the scoring off in the second inning with a leadoff double from Nick Vigo who would be the first run to score in the game. Later in the inning, two more runs scored for the visitors via a bases-loaded fielder's choice and a double down the left field line by Myles Hager which scored Ruben Gonzalez from third.

The Toros got two runs back in the fifth thanks to a hard double down the left field line by Polizzi which drove in Stephen Kish. The next batter up was Morelli who singled up the middle scoring Polizzi.

The Otters padded their lead with one more run in the sixth but the Toros came back late in the game with a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth innings. With the game on the line and down a run with 2 out in the ninth, Miguel Castaneda hit a roaring double down to left with a man on, scoring Viktor Arreola as the home fans cheered with the game headed for extra innings.

It took until the 11th inning for a team to score and it was the visitors who got on the board with one out. A leadoff double to right center field got the inning started from Josh Heinz who later reached third on a wild pitch. The stage was set for Ryan Winkler who hit a sacrifice fly to center field and drove in Heinz.

The Toros had their opportunity to further extended the game in the eleventh which started out with a leadoff single but Morelli but later in the inning Daryl Donerson grounded out to second base on a fielder choice with the bases loaded.

The Toros kick off their next series away at Cal State San Marcos Thursday at 3 p.m. CSUDH will finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday.
