Baseball Wins Slugfest to Open CCAA Series with Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS – Miguel Castaneda drove in four runs, including his first three-run home run of the season, as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team outslugged Cal State San Marcos to open the four-game CCAA series with a 10-8 win Thursday afternoon.
 
The Toros (10-25, 8-17 CCAA) dealt the final blow in the ninth inning. Castaneda and Daryl Donerson led off with back-to-back singles and pinch-hitter Shawn Sweeney brought both of them home with a single to right, making the 10-8 difference.
 
Joshua Gogue pitched a 1-2-3 outing in the bottom half of the ninth for his first save of the season.
 
Both ballclubs combined for 27 hits, including seven were for extra bases and 17 RBI. Castaneda and Nick Morelli each had three hits.
 
Starter Joe Bresson pitched into the seventh inning giving up four earned runs. He also struck out three. Joe Mercado got the win after pitching a shutout eighth inning.
 
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead after five but the Toros responded the next inning with five runs. Morelli and John Soteropulos opened up with back-to-back singles, Parker Hokuf brought in one run with a base hit up the middle and Castaneda put the Toros ahead with a three-run shot to left. Trevor North completed the five-run inning with a RBI double.
 
Castaneda got his fourth RBI in the seventh, when he singled up the middle to score in Soteropulos to give the Toros a 6-2 lead.
 
The lead was quickly erased when the Cougars scored five times in the seventh to retake a 7-6 lead. CSUDH did respond in the eighth with Esteban Ortega hitting a two-run double to right. San Marcos did answer back with a pair of runs of its own in the inning.
 
Cougar starter Alex Wall lasted 5.1 innings allowing three runs before turning it over to the bullpen.
 
The series resumes in San Marcos Friday at 3 p.m.
