Soteropulos Goes Deep Twice in Toros Doubleheader Win Over Otters

***Note: Sunday's game is now 11 a.m. first pitch

CARSON – John Soteropulos homered twice Saturday as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team overcame the gusty winds at Toro Field to sweep a CCAA series-opening doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Toros rallied to take a 5-4 game one win in 10 innings and ran away to a 7-3 win in game two before the sun would set.

Game 1 – CSUDH 5, CSUMB 4 (10 Innings)
The Toros had the bases loaded with two out for Esteban Ortega. The third baseman hit a chopper up the middle and slid to first base to beat shortstop Zakry Taylor's throw for the walkoff.

Both teams had opportunities to break the 4-4 tie in the later innings. For the Toros in the eighth, Nick Morelli was on second with two out. Brandon Polizzi hit a fast grounder down the left field line only to be perfectly snagged by the third baseman but the throw was too late for an infield hit. Adrian Guzman hit a short fly to center only to be caught by centerfielder Nick Vigo.

The Otters had a 2-0 lead going into the fourth inning until the Toros erased it in their half. Parker Hokuf led off with a double down the left field line and scored on Miguel Castaneda's single to left. Daryl Donerson scored in Castaneda with a double to left and pinch-hitter Shawn Sweeney hit into a ground out that was good enough to score in the third run.

The lead didn't last long, however, has the Otters answered back in the fifth. With the aid of the wind, Hayden Duer took a pitch high and deep to left for a two-run home run to put CSUMB back in front 4-3.

Soteropulos' first of a two homers came in the seventh inning, when he went opposite field to right.

Joe Bresson threw five innings surrendering three earned runs. He did strike out two. Joe Mercado tossed three shutout innings of relief and Cy Scott picked up his second win of the season also putting two zeros on the board.

Bresson's counterpart, Jeffery Ahern, lasted four innings and allowed eight hits and a walk.

Game 2 – CSUDH 7, CSUMB 3
After retiring the Otters in the first, the Toros struck first when Soteropulos, on the first pitch he saw, homered the same direction to right field.

Although the Otters took a 3-1 lead in the third inning, the Toros responded by scoring two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-3 lead.

The fourth inning that tied the game began with Morelli hitting a leadoff single to center, Soteropulos hit a double to set two runners into scoring position. Ortega would hit a single up the middle and Hokuf hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Trevor North would lead off the fifth with a walk and reached second after Polizzi hit into a fielding error. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Morelli hit a grounder that was enough to score in pinch-runner Stephen Kish and break the 3-3 tie. Another wild pitch while the Otters were intentionally walking Soteropulos allowed the Toros to take a 5-3 lead.

Nick Suniga struck out five batters and conceded two earned runs in his six innings on the mound to earn his second win. Jacob Musial and Joshua Gogue both went the rest of the way shutting out CSUMB.

The two teams will meet one more time at Toro Field for a 11 a.m. first pitch.
