Bresson Throws A Complete-Game; Toros Fall Twice to Gators

SAN FRANCISCO — Joe Bresson threw a complete-game outing for the second time this season but the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team missed out on making ground on the CCAA South Division standings with a doubleheader loss at San Francisco State Friday.

The Gators shut out the Toros 4-0 in game one while getting three runs in the middle innings to take game two, 6-2.

Pending on result of Cal State LA (13-18 CCAA, .419 win percentage) against UC San Diego, the Toros (12-22 CCAA, .353 win percentage) had entered the day trailing the Golden Eagles by one win. The conference takes the top three teams in each division into the tournament.

Game 1 - SFSU 4, CSUDH 0
San Francisco had quickly jumped ahead 2-0 after using a pair of doubles and a single off of Bresson. After Bresson gave up another run in the second, he settled down and limited the Gators to five hits for six innings.

The Toros couldn't up with an offensive spark against Matthew Hernandez, who went the distance by allowing only three hits and striking out eight. Only Brandon Polizzi, Esteban Ortega and Shawn Sweeney had the hits, all singles.

CSUDH's offense had only reach as far as second base within the first two innings.

Game 2 - SFSU 6, CSUDH 2
The Gators had struck first with a one-run first inning but the Toros had a brief lead in the fourth. Miguel Castaneda had one-out double and Daryl Donerson followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Adrian Guzman doubled to plate Castaneda and Evan Yeager hit a single to drive in Donerson to give the Toros a 2-1 lead.

The lead was brief as the Gators got the benefit of a leadoff walk and a two-run single, giving the hosts a 3-2 lead.

SFSU would add insurance runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to complete the 6-2 win.

Nick Suniga went five innings allowing four earned runs and striking out four. Walks had hurt him the most as he issued seven.

The two ballclubs meet again Saturday at 11 a.m.
