Toros Take Game One Over No. 12 Tritons After Five-Run Fifth Inning

CARSON – Esteban Ortega hit a leadoff home run that would start a five-run rally in the fifth inning as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team ran away with a 12-6 win over division-leading No. 12 UC San Diego to open a four-game CCAA series Thursday.

The Toros have won seven of their last nine to improve to 14-25 overall, 12-17 in conference play.

CSUDH had to keep up with UC San Diego (25-11, 17-9 CCAA) in the first three innings. The Tritons struck early with a two-run home run off of starter Joe Bresson in the first inning, the Toros tied the game by the end of the second inning.

After the Tritons scored three times to retake the lead in the third, the Toros responded with the same number in their half of the inning. Ortega began the rally with a single and Miguel Castaneda scored in the run with a double to left center while reaching third on a throw. Daryl Donerson drew a walk to put runners on the corners and the Toros tied the game on Shawn Sweeney's groundout and Adrian Guzman's single up the middle.

As soon as Ortega hit the leadoff homer in the fifth, the Toros bats would ignite further. Three straight singles by Castaneda, Donerson and Sweeney loaded the bases and Guzman hit a ground-rule double down the left field line that scored in two. Evan Yeager hit a grounder to second that was enough to score the fourth run and Brandon Polizzi completed the rally with a single to right field to give Dominguez Hills a 10-6 lead.

Polizzi had four of the Toros 16 hits while Ortega was a triple shy from hitting for the cycle.

Bresson went 5.2 on the mound with two strikeouts and conceded five earned runs. Jacob Musial tossed a two-hit 1.1 shutout inning and Cy Scott went the rest of the way allowing just a hit while striking out two.

The two ballclubs return to Toro Field one more time Friday at 3 p.m. The series will then shift over to La Jolla for a doubleheader on Saturday.
