Toros Rally in Game Two to Complete Four-Game Sweep Over Cougars

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team slugged its way to a 7-4 game one win and had to rally to a 6-5 victory in the second contest to complete the four-game CCAA series sweep over Cal State San Marcos Saturday at Toro Field.

Winners of five of their last six games, the Toros have put themselves in the hunt for a spot to the CCAA Tournament next month. CSUDH has taken sole possession of fourth place in the CCAA South Division at 11-17 and is now chasing crosstown rival Cal State LA, which is at 13-14 in conference play.

Game 1 – CSUDH 7, CSUSM 4
With the CSUDH bullpen unable to protect a 4-3 lead and wasting a strong performance by starting pitcher Ethan Etchebarren, outfielder Daryl Donerson recaptured the lead for the Toros in the bottom half of eighth inning.

Etchebarren pitched seven efficient innings, pitching in and out of trouble while allowing three runs and eight hits.

With one out and first baseman Miguel Castaneda at second, Donerson lined a double to the left center field gap that gave CSUDH a 5-4 lead. The Toros added two insurance runs as relief pitcher Joe Bresson sealed the victory with a scoreless ninth.

Bresson who came in with one out in the eighth inning, was able to escape a bases-loaded hole keeping the game tied at four.

CSUDH jumped all over Cougars starting pitcher Taylor Ahearn, scoring two early runs. Ahearn will settle down, pitching seven battled tested innings while allowing four runs and nine hits.

The Cougars offense answered back with two runs of their own in the third inning, tying the game at 2. The Toros outhit the Cougars 12-11, with both teams failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities, hitting into devastating double plays.

Offensively the Toros were led by third baseman Esteban Ortega who had a key two-run double. Right fielder Nick Morelli added two hits while scoring two runs.

With the victory, the Toros winning streak reached a season-high three games.

Game 2 – CSUDH 6, CSUSM 5
After defensive miscues in the fourth and fifth innings allowed San Marcos to score all five of its runs to take a 5-1 lead, the Cougars bullpen failed to protect it and the Toros went through the entire lineup to tie the game.

The Toros opened the inning with back-to-back singles by John Soterpulos and Ortega and consecutive walks forced in the second run. Shawn Sweeney took a pitch deep enough to score in Ortega from third. Brandon Polizzi earned a walk to force in the third run and Morelli, the ninth man at the plate in the inning, hit a short fly to left field to tie the game 5-5.

After watching the Cougars go with the suicide squeeze multiple times in the game, the Toros attempted the play with Ortega at third but Sweeney's bunt was perfectly placed for him to reach on a RBI single and give the Toros a 6-5 lead.

CSUDH had struck first in the first inning with an unearned run. With Polizzi at third, Morelli stole second and the catcher Isaias Torres' throw to second goes into the outfield that allowed the Toros leadoff man to score.

Toro starting pitcher Rigo Fernandez pitched himself out of jams within the first three innings but got into trouble in the fourth, which had allowed the Cougars to score three runs for the lead.

Fernandez struck out two but walked four in his outing. Nick Suniga threw a one-hit, 2.1 shutout innings of relief for the win.

CSUDH will face a big test this week with division leader UC San Diego. The four-game series begins at Toro Field Thursday at 3 p.m.
