Softball Falls to Chaminade, Western Oregon in Day Two of Tournament of Champinos

TURLOCK – Kendelle Messersmith had five hits and Damari Simon recorded two RBI to highlight the second day of the Tournament of Champions for Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday.

The Toros dropped the first game 4-1 to Chaminade and then 9-4 to Western Oregon in the afternoon cap.

Game 1 – Chaminade 4, CSUDH 1
The Swords took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the scoreboard remained the same until the fifth inning.

After a quiet first inning, Dominguez Hills tallied five hits over the next three but were unable to push any runs across until the fifth. Jazmin Guzman led off with a single to left field, moved to second on Madison Murphy's sixth sacrifice bunt of the season, and gained another 60 feet on Simon's infield single. Analisa Nicholson's sac fly to left field would bring in Guzman to even up the score 1-1

Chaminade answered back in the bottom half of the frame using three hits to score one more run to take a 2-1 lead.

The Blue and Silver added two insurance runs in the sixth coming from Maureen Hutchinson's two-run homerun.

Sharie Albert threw her sixth complete game of the season and only issued two walks while striking out one.

Game 2 – WOU 9, CSUDH 4
After the Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the first without needing to record a hit, the Toros did tie the game in the third inning when Murphy drew a two-out walk and scored all the way from first on Damari Simon's triple to right center.

Trailing 4-2, the Toros evened the score again in the fifth inning. Guzman led off with a base hit through the right side and Murphy followed with a hit-by-pitch. Simon came through again with a RBI double down the left field line and Messersmith went the other side to drive in Murphy.

The Wolves came back though in their half again by putting five unanswered runs, including a three-run triple.

Kiara Mendoza threw four innings before turning it over to Albert in the fifth.

The Toros will wrap up their part in the Tournament of Champions at Pedretti Field Sunday, facing Saint Martin's (11:30 a.m.) and Hawai`i Hilo (2 p.m.)
