Offense Backs Bresson's Gem Outing in Win Over Coyotes to Start CCAA Series

SAN BERNARDINO – Joe Bresson struck out five batters in seven innings and got the offensive support he was looking for with a 5-run eighth inning as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team claimed the CCAA series opener with Cal State San Bernardino 9-4 Thursday afternoon.

The win also snaps a 13-game losing skid the Toros were on.

Bresson reached seven innings allowing three runs on as many hits and two walks. He only threw 101 pitches.

Two was the number of the day for center fielder Brandon Evans, for it was the number of hits, doubles and runs driven in. John Soteropulos and Daryl Donerson also hit for doubles. Donerson also stretched a triple.

Facing the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week right-hander Sabino Ramirez, the Toros were offensively silent until the third inning. Evans hit his first two-bagger and eventually scored on Brandon Polizzi's single to right field.

The Coyotes did counter with a run of their own in the inning, Lucas Martinez would hit a two-out RBI double to tie the game. CSUSB would take their only lead in the game the following inning with a two-run home run by Dominic Campeau.

Bresson would retire 9-of-11 before turning the ball over to the bullpen in the eighth inning.

The Toros did bring the deficit down to one in the fifth inning. With two down and Esteban Ortega at second, Trevor North hit a shallow fly ball that was nearly caught by a diving center fielder Dillon Fahr but couldn't hold on, allowing the run to score.

The rally in the seventh inning started with Miguel Castaneda and Ortega hitting back-to-back singles. Although the next two batters were retired, pinch-hitter Benjamin Donerson put the Toros ahead with an opposite field, 2-run triple.

CSUDH's 5-run eighth started with Nick Morelli singling and Soteropulos doubling to put two runners into scoring position. Castaneda and Ortega both hit back-to-back singles to drive in the runs and Daryl Donerson copied his brother by hitting a double down the right field line and Evans followed the same pattern with a double to right center to put the Toros ahead 9-3.

Despite allowing a run in the ninth, the combination of Rigo Fernandez and Joshua Gogue pitched two hitless innings.

The Toros return to Fiscalini Field for game two of the series Friday at 2 p.m.
