Castaneda Drives in Four Runs in Baseball's Loss to Cal State LA

By Carlos Alvarez

CARSON -- Miguel Castaneda went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI, Brandon Polizzi also had a three hit afternoon, but an eight-run fourth inning did serious damage in the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team's 14-9 loss to crosstown rival Cal State LA Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles finish the CCAA series sweeping the Toros in four.

CSUDH starting pitcher Nick Suniga (0-4) escaped a first inning bases-loaded jam, but was unable to replicate those same results in the fourth as CSULA build a 10-0 lead. The Eagles capitalized on two errors and a misplayed ball by second baseman Castaneda, closing the book on Suniga.

Suniga pitched three inefficient innings, throwing 87 pitches while allowing eight runs (six earned) off of nine hits.

On the other hand, CSULA starting pitcher Greg Humbert pitched three dominant efficient scoreless innings allowing two hits, while throwing a mere 30 pitches.

The Toros offense mounted its comeback against freshman relief pitcher Justin Davis (2-1), who in a surprise moved relieved Humbert. Davis got the victory,  pitching 3 plus innings allowing eight runs (five earned) off of 11 hits.

Leading the Toros comeback was the pleasant performance of redshirt freshman Benjamin Donerson, younger brother of outfielder Daryl Donerson.

With third baseman John Soteropulos on second base, Donerson lined a sharp single to right scoring Soteropulos to give the Toros their first run of the game. Donerson finished the game with three hits, scoring three runs while driving in two.

Offensively CSUDH continued its hot hitting, collecting 15 total hits. Shortstop Brandon Polizzi remained hot at the plate collecting three hits while scoring two runs. Polizzi has a total of 30 hits early in the season. Castaneda was able to avenge his defensive woes, with three hits including a double, while driving in four runs.

The early deficit was too much to overcome as CSUDH relievers Joshua Gongue and Ethan Etchebarren combined to hold CSULA to four runs after the fourth inning. Both teams scored two runs in the seventh to give the Eagles a 14-8 lead. CSUDH will tack on a run in the eight, but will go down quietly in its last at bat.

Offensively CSULA was led by designated hitter Christian Broussard, who was three-for-five from the plate with a double while scoring three runs and driving in two. Third baseman Andrew Hermanson added three hits, three runs batted in while scoring two runs.

With the loss CSUDH moves to 2-15, 0-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CSULA moves to 13-5, 6-2 in CCAA play.

The Toros hope to end its losing streak when they travel to San Bernardino to begin its four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino on May 9 at 2 p.m.
