Toros Battle Gusty Winds in Turlock; Splits Day One at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK – Damari Simon's 3-run homerun to left field put the mercy rule into effect in the Cal State Dominguez Hills 10-3 win against Notre Dame De Namur University to open the Tournament of Champions on an extremely windy Friday Morning. Hawaii Pacific took the afternoon cap 10-3.

Game 1 – NDNU 1, CSUDH 10
The Toros batted around the line-up in the bottom of the first inning and took an early 5-0 lead. Madison Murphy doubled to right center and scored on Analisa Nicholson's single up the middle. Kendelle Messersmith singled to left field bringing in Damari Simon who reached on a walk. With the winds blowing 25 MPH at different directions, it would work in the Toros favor as Jade Loe reached on a dropped fly ball by the second baseman which allowed both Messersmith and Nicholson to score. Kayla Lock singled up the middle and Loe scored on a throwing error by the catcher attempt to tag the designated player who was retreating back to second base.

Murphy began the rally again in the second inning with a single through the right side and swiped second base. The gusty winds played another part as NDNU's shortstop dropped Simon's fly ball. Nicholson singled to left center which scored Murphy. Lyzette Reveles grounded out to third base allowing Simon to cross home plate and give the Toros a 7-0 lead.

The mercy rule would come into effect in the fifth when Simon hit a 3-run blast to left field.

Sharie Albert picked up her third win in the circle tossing her fifth complete game of the season.

Game 2 – HPU 10, CSUDH 3
Hawaii Pacific took a 3-0 lead scoring one run in the first inning and two in the second.

Guzman singled through the left side, Simon walked, and Nicholson singled through the right side to load the bases in the bottom of the third. Reveles reached on a fielding error by the second baseman which allowed Simon and Guzman to score. Messersmith singled through the left side to load the bases and Loe hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Nicholson to even up the score 3-3.

The Sharks added seven more runs throughout the second half of the game to take a 10-3 lead and kept the Toro bats quiet only allowing two more hits.

Murphy, Simon, Nicholson, Reveles and Lock had one hit each while Guzman and Messersmith had two apiece.

Kiara Mendoza tossed her third complete game of the season and only issued one walk.

The Toros return to the Tournament of Champions Saturday, facing Chaminade University at 10 a.m. followed by Western Oregon at 3 p.m.
