Toros Hold Off Rally in Game One; Gators Take Nightcap on Walkoff in the Eighth

CARSON – Kiara Mendoza threw 10.2 strong innings in two games which included her first career save as the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team split with San Francisco State at Toro Diamond Thursday.

With the series moved to Carson from San Francisco due to rain in the forecast, the Toros struck early with six runs and had to rely on Mendoza to maintain the lead in a 7-6 game-one win, and in a rare situation where the Toros were designated as the 'visiting team' in their own ballpark, the Gators walked off in the eighth, 2-1, to take game two.

Game 1 – CSUDH 7, SFSU 6
The Toros caught a break to start off the game with a dropped fly error by shortstop Kasie Trezona, allowing Jazmin Guzman to reach base. Following a wild pitch, Analisa Nicholson drove in the unearned run with a base hit down the left field line. Kendelle Messersmith brought in Nicholson and Lyzette Reveles with a single through the left side.

Renee Galindo opened the second with a walk and reached third on back-to-back singles from Madison Murphy and Damari Simon. Reveles would drive all three runs in with a double, giving the Toros a 6-1 lead and ending starting pitcher Megan Clark's day on the circle.

The difference in the game came in the third. Messersmith led off with a single to center and reliever Lindsey Cassidy would walk Kayla Lock, Guzman and then Simon to force in a run.

San Francisco State would slowly climb back scoring two in the third and three in the fourth to bring make it the 7-6 deficit.

Sharie Albert earned her first win having reached four innings before handing the ball to Mendoza.

Mendoza would limit the Gators to a single in the sixth and a walk in the seventh.

Game 2 – SFSU 2, CSUDH 1 (8 innings)
The Toros quickly went to work on Gator starter Aryn Guzman, loading the bases with no outs. The Gators did escape the threat by retiring three straight after.

CSUDH did get on the board first in the second inning. Messersmith led off with a double to left, moved to third on Lock's single and scored on Jazmin Guzman's sacrifice fly.

Mendoza limited the Gators to three hits within the first four innings. It was until the fifth that San Francisco State would tie the game. Megan Clark led off with a single through the left side and reached second on a walk. The tying run came on back-to-back sacrifice bunts.

The Toros had a runner on third in both the sixth and seventh innings but were stranded.

SFSU had runners on first and third with two down. Clark hit a short popup behind the pitching circle, Jazmin Guzman moved as quick as she could but bobbled and couldn't get the third out, allowing the Gators to walkoff with a hit.

Mendoza tossed 92 pitches allowing 10 hits and two walks while striking out one.

The two teams will meet one more time in Carson Friday at noon.
