Guzman Gets Two Hits in Toros Loss to Warriors

TURLOCK – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team was unable to hold onto the lead as Stanislaus State produced a three-run seventh-inning to snatch game three from the Toros 5-3 Sunday afternoon.

Brandon Polizzi caught the Warriors (17-9, 7-8 CCAA) on their heels leading off the game with a bunt single to first base and advanced to third on Adrian Guzman's double to left field. A textbook sacrifice fly by Parker Hokuf allowed Polizzi to cross home plate.

The second through fourth innings were quiet for both teams as no hits or runs were recorded.

Daryl Donerson and Brandon Evans began the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles to get the rally started for the Toros (6-19, 4-11 CCAA). Polizzi was intentionally walked to load the bases and forced a pitching change for the Warriors. Guzman's base hit to right field drove in Donerson and Esteban Ortega's sac fly scored Evans to take a 3-0 lead.

SSU answered back in the bottom half of the frame with two runs on two hits which forced a pitching change for CSUDH. Ethan Etchebarren tossed 4.2 innings allowing two earned runs on two hits while striking out three and walking four.

Evans and Trevor North drew back-to-back walks to begin the seventh inning but two questionable calls at second and first base fell in favor of Stan State as they turned a debatable six-four-three double play.

The Warriors pushed across three runs in the seventh to take the lead 5-3.

Polizzi, Ortega, Donerson and Evans all had one hit each while Guzman collected two.

The Cardinal and Gold returns home March 25 to host a three-game series with Chico State at Toro Field.
